Gaming should be avoided before bedtime by teenage boys study

Margaret Jack  By Margaret Jack   |   Posted in Sleep Research   |   Friday 2nd November 2012

A study conducted at Flinders University in Australia has found that prolonged gaming before lights out is disruptive to getting a good, restful night's sleep, which is essential for any young person.

The Games Politics researchers concluded two years ago that males playing games before bed was no different to watching a film but they have now revised their findings.

The study consisted of 17 males playing a fast-paced and violent video game for 50 to 150 minutes before bedtime. The participants had their sleep and heart-rate monitored and the results found that those who played for the longest period of time lost 27 minutes of sleep. Even though the teenagers went to bed at the same time as usual they still experienced significant sleep disruptions such as waking up throughout the night.

Sleep is made up of different stages of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and this was reduced by 12 minutes among the teen that's played for over 2 hours. This is significant because REM plays an important role in helping us remember things that have happened during the day. For a teenager in their final years in education playing video games may not be the best activity to do before bed.
