Big businesses taking interest in workers sleep patterns report

By Margaret Jack   |   Posted in Sleep Research   |   Friday 25th January 2013

It has been reported in the Wall Street Journal that big firms such as Goldman Sachs and Proctor & Gamble are introducing sleep hygiene course to ensure staff are more alert when they are doing their work.

These are not the only big names that have taken an interest in their workers; Google, Nike and The Huffington Post have all created ‘nap rooms’ for employees in recent years. At the Google headquarters in Mountain View, California they have special sleep stations called EnergyPods where employees who have been working long hours can go for some quick shuteye.

Employees have always been aware that exercise is important in relation to health and productivity so they have already invested in making it possible for them to access a gym. Now they have also realised that sleep is also important in terms of productivity and health and safety. Taking an interest in their employees sleep patterns could help boost their productivity and ensure they aren’t putting themselves or others at risk.

However instead of companies just installing ‘nap rooms’ they need to find out the cause of their employees tiredness at work. There could be many reasons; ones that they can’t help such as looking after a sick child or self inflicted reasons such as a busy social life. Technology could also be a reason why they aren’t getting enough sleep because they’re taking their phones and other technological devices to bed.
