While it’s not a good idea to drink too much of anything in the hour or so before bedtime, there are a number of drinks that can actually assist our descent into sleep.

Warm Milk

Warm milk, or a milk-based drink, is a classic pre-sleep comforter. It contains the amino acid tryptophan and the hormone melatonin, both of which are directly related to sleep quality. Whether the levels contained are significant enough to take effect before we go to bed is debatable, but what isn’t in question is the soothing relaxation that comes from curling up with a cup of warm milk – and that’s reason enough to have it as part of your evening routine.

Lavender Tea

One the most popular herbal teas, Lavender has an aromatheraputic effect that can calm the mind and body. Spending ten minutes or so with a cup of Lavender tea can be enough to relieve the stresses of the most hectic days and prepare yourself for a night of restful sleep.

Valerian Tea

This potent herbal tea isn’t for everyone as it has a sharp pungent taste, but Valerian root is a traditional sedative that can be the perfect pre-sleep relaxation. As with any botanic tea, it’s important to not use boiling water on Valerian tea as it can negate or even eliminate the active properties.
