New research published this week has revealed a link between sleep apnoea and overactive bladder syndrome in women.

Seventy-two female patients at Barcelona’s Hospital del Mar who were suspected sufferers of sleep apnoea were tested on symptoms relating to overactive bladder syndrome, including nocturia, which is the need to get up to go to the toilet during the night. Of the group, sixty-two were found to have sleep apnoea, with sufferers recording a ‘significantly higher’ rate of overactive bladder syndrome symptoms.

The study is one of the first to assess the link between the two conditions, despite overactive bladder syndrome being known as a common symptom of sleep apnoea. It remains to be seen whether one condition causes the other, although this will be the focus of future investigation.

The results of the study were presented at the European Respiratory Society’s Annual Congress in Vienna.
