A hormonal change during middle age has been highlighted as a potential sleep disrupting factor for men, according to a medical report in Taiwan. A team from the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital identified the drop in testosterone – which can happen at an undefined age in men between 40 and 70 – as a key factor in the reduction in sleep quality, along with a number of other side effects including depression, low energy and worsening memory.

The researchers tested a group of 231 participants, with a combined average age of 46, and found that 45% had the testosterone deficiency, and of those around 60% reported some sort of sleep problem.

A dietary change, reducing cholesterol, and adopting a healthier lifestyle with exercise are recommended by the team as ways to combat the hormonal shift and help retain a good quality sleep hygiene.
