Premier League manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that he has been struggling to get sufficient sleep since taking over at struggling Queens Park Rangers, reports the Evening Standard this week. The London club are currently bottom of the league without a win this season, a situation that has proven to be immediately stressful for the new boss.

“I’ve got stuff on my mind and it’s not been easy (to sleep). I was sleeping very well two weeks until I came back to work,” Redknapp told the newspaper. “It’s more difficult because you’re lying there waiting for the alarm to go off very early.”

Many people will be able to relate to Redknapp’s woes as work-related stress is a widely reported sleep problem. Sleep deprivation through this type of stress can be particularly difficult, and can accurately be described as a vicious circle. The fatigued mind is put through its paces during the night, resulting in extreme tiredness, poor memory and general sluggishness the following day – all of which aren’t conducive to the productivity that would allow the mind to settle the next night – resulting in a worsening situation where not just sleep quality but general health and wellbeing can suffer.

Potentially successful ways to combat this type of sleep deprivation include making lists prior to going to bed in order to ‘set aside’ work problems for a more appropriate hour, as well as adopting a mentally-relaxing bedtime routine that avoids trying to process information, such as working on a computer or checking a smartphone.
