American kids sleeping enough report

Margaret Jack  By Margaret Jack   |   Posted in Sleep Research   |   Last updated: Tuesday 27th November 2012

A new US study has revealed that children in America are sleeping as much as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The University of California research found that babies up to 24 months old slept an average of 12 to 14 hours per day, children between aged 2 and 4 slept around 11 hours, those aged up to 10 slept an average of 10 hours and by the age of 16 the average dropped to 9 hours. All of the sleep durations are within the advised guidelines.

The investigation, which used three nationwide data sets from 1997, 2002 and 2007, surveyed the sleeping duration of more than 7000 children. Information from parents was used to gauge the length of time that children sleep on a nightly basis. While this information can be accurate in terms of measuring average sleep time, it isn’t able to determine other important factors such as sleep quality and the frequency of disturbances.

Child sleep duration – particularly of school age children – is a keenly-studied subject, such is the importance of the link between academic performance and sleep time.
