We have all been laid in bed before unable to get to sleep and constantly checking what time it is. If counting sheep hasn’t worked for you, here are five top tips that should help you nod off in no time.
Get yourself into a regular routine
Going to bed at a similar time every night allows your body to programme itself which means that you will sleep better. A member of the Sleep Council says; “A bedtime ritual teaches the brain to become familiar with sleep times and wake time, it programmes the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.”
Relaxation is key
Relaxing and winding down is a critical part of getting ready for bed. Having a bath before bed is great for relaxation as it brings the body to an ideal temperature for sleeping. Reading before going to sleep is also very helpful as it relaxes the mind from all distractions and lets you forget the stresses of the day.
Avoid TVs in the bedroom
Our sleep is dictated by light and hormones and in the evening when it gets darker our bodies produce melatonin which gives our body clock its cue. Closing the curtains and dimming the lights in the evening will allow this process to begin. Having a TV on before going to bed cancels out this process, which means a relaxed state will be impossible due to the bright lights that they emit. The visual stimulations of the TV means that the brain cannot make the transition to sleep.
Don’t drink caffeinated beverages before you go to bed
Drinks such as cola, coffee and tea all contain quite a lot of caffeine. Reducing the intake through the day will result in a deeper sleep. Caffeine suppresses the release of melatonin for up to 10 hours. It also promotes the supply of adrenaline which is the complete opposite of what we need for a good nights sleep.
Make sure your bed is comfortable
It is difficult to get a good night sleep if a bed isn’t right for the person sleeping in it. Buying the right mattress is imperative for allowing yourself to have the good night sleep. It is especially important when you think we spend around one third of our lives in bed. When picking a mattress, you need to make decisions about firmness, type of mattress, type of bed and size. Premium memory foam mattresses have become very popular due to their health benefits such as eliminating joint and muscle aches and helping with arthritis. Ergoflex® memory foam mattresses mould to the contours of the body, alleviating pressure points and giving the body optimum support and comfort, resulting in a restful and more comfortable sleep. They also come with a 10 year guarantee which means that it will be a great investment that will have a long life.
