Our life and work can often mean the sacrifice of a good nights sleep. Travelling and working late in to the night to fit in busy schedules can result in people accumulating sleep debt. In the journal “Sleep” research has been published that states more sleep can enhance an individual’s physical performance. An athlete’s lifestyle can include a large amount of travel and long training hours, sleep for them often takes a back seat to their career. Research done at Stanford University in the US has shown that this can actually be damaging their performance.
The study was conducted on male basketball players they had to sleep for ten hours instead of eight for six weeks; it showed that their shooting accuracy improved by 9% they also ran 0.7 seconds faster. The athletes taking part in the study were also required to stop drinking coffee and alcohol which will have had some effect on their overall performance. The study proved that sleep and rest was on the same level of importance and their training and diet. The findings suggest that sleep over a longer period of time to reduce sleep debt is more efficient than just trying to make it up on the day of the match.
A memory foam mattress can offer the perfect sleep environment for athletes. The mattress offers optimum comfort so that they get a restful night sleep. The memory foam moulds around the curves of the body offering upwards support, relieving pressure and the hips and the spine giving the mattress healing benefits, so that the athletes can have a restorative sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated the next day.
