Last week the new Paediatric Sleep and Ventilation Unit opened at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London. The unit is estimated to be able to help 1000 children each year who find it difficult to breathe through the night. The opportunity to be able to open this new children's unit has come from the £1 million funding by the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity.

The opening of the unit means the hospital can now offer the facilities for complete evaluation and care for children with sleep and sleep-related illnesses. The unit makes it possible for the hospital to provide better care for the children that are on long term ventilation or rely on ventilators to breathe.

The sleep and ventilation centre is equipped with sate-of-the-art technology that allows them to carry out sophisticated tests that can monitor oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the bloodstream, movement of the chest and abdomen, airflow, electrical activity on the brain and heart rate. The data collected by the equipment allows them to diagnose their patients and then plan appropriate treatment.

Difficulty breathing whilst sleeping is the first sign of sleep apnoea which can lead to other health issues, so the unit is important to be able to identify the children's condition and start treating it quickly to ensure the children are able to have a comfortable nights sleep.
