How to choose a mattress?

Memory foam mattresses are an increasingly popular choice for consumers, offering a welcome alternative to the traditional continuous-spring and pocket spring mattress types. However, with this rise in popularity there has been a huge increase in the number of companies offering memory foam mattress products, and, like most products, there is a significant difference between those at the top and bottom ends of the market in performance, quality and price.


It can be tempting as a buyer to opt for the cheapest available mattress, in the belief that it is a bargain and will save money. However, in the world of memory foam mattresses this is not something we would advise, for two key reasons. Firstly, the performance of a cheap mattress cannot compare realistically to a more premium alternative, both immediately and certainly over a reasonable period of time. A mattress constructed using poor quality materials not only delivers low grade support to your body and results in uncomfortable sleep, but can actually lead to longer term health problems such as strains and aches if allowed to continue for any significant amount of time. It is because of this that low quality mattresses are generally deemed to have a short life-span. Secondly, this lack of longevity in the materials will almost certainly lead to a lower quality mattress needing to be replaced far quicker than a higher quality mattress – underlining the fact that the initial low cost turns out to be a false economy, and ultimately more expensive.

How to compare memory foam mattresses

We appreciate that when looking to purchase a memory foam mattress, the seemingly endless myriad of options now available from traditional bed retailers and online mattress websites can make for extensive and ultimately confusing reading.

It's likely that you are currently considering the purchase of a new bed or mattress as you read this, so there's a good chance you will be acutely aware that a mattress that provided excellent support and comfort in the early stages of ownership can well deteriorate significantly over a relatively short period of time.

Many retailers often avoid displaying the key component specifications relating to the mattresses interior construction, making it impossible to determine the clinical support and longevity to be expected over the mattresses lifecycle.

Some retailers will openly display certain specification values on offer, which obviously helps. However it can be often be the case that two items that should be the same can actually vary considerably. To explain, a memory foam mattress of a comparable specification from different manufacturers should feel similar, although it is too often the case that this is not borne out in practice.

The main reason for this is down to the quality of the memory foam layer in the mattress itself. Whilst two items may have a comparable specifications, namely the density, memory foam layer depth, ILD (also known as IFD - "Indentation Load or Force Deflection") and firmness rating, the quality of the foam itself is likely to make items of an apparent similar specification differ in how they feel and perform with real use. Moreover, although the density value attributed to the memory foam layer in both items may ostensibly be the same, it does not necessarily follow suit when considering other key specification values such as the ILD rating or temperature range at which the memory foam is designed to change property. A true visco elastic memory foam mattress such as the Ergoflex is engineered to react to body temperature, and the temperature range manipulated accordingly. A memory foam mattress that is advertised as "temperature sensitive" may well change its physical properties with heat, but at what level? Too low or too high, and the visco-elastic foam will not work in unison with your body's core temperature to provide the correct level of firmness and support required.

The source of the memory foam in a mattress is a crucial point here, as many popular retailers currently purchase their materials from one of a handful of major manufacturers. This practice enables several retailers to effectively sell the same product, with the minor difference of their own branding. Another outcome of this practice is a variation in consistency, performance, and the overall "feel" of the foam between different batches - further complicating your understanding of how the mattress you receive will feel.

This of course is not true of all companies in the sector. For example, the market leading Tempur mattress is constructed of materials made and wholly owned by them. Memory foam mattress depth, density and ILD

The technical performance properties of any memory foam mattress can be assessed by looking at the depth of each layered component, the density and the ILD, which stands for 'indentation load deflection'.

First of all, let's look at depth. It's a common misconception that the thicker the memory foam element the more 'comfortable' the mattress will be. This fails to stand up to scrutiny, as an excessively thick memory foam layer will simply be too soft, and envelope the user, making it difficult to move around and offering a vastly reduced level of support where it's needed. On the other hand, a memory foam layer that is too thin will simply sink into the base layer. Therefore, there is an 'optimum' depth for memory foam to perform at its best. The Ergoflex™ uses 9cm of 3rd generation HD visco-elastic ACPT™ memory foam, which provides the perfect level of pressure-relieving performance.

Next, the density of a memory foam mattress relates to the specific make-up of the memory layer itself rather than the whole mattress. In short, the lower the density, the less raw material makes up the memory foam content, resulting in larger air cavities throughout the interior. In contrast, a higher density indicates a more tightly packed memory foam layer that contains smaller air cavities. High density (HD) memory foam mattresses offer a 'full-bodied' experience, whereas low density alternatives have much more 'give'. The density also contributes to the overall life-span of the mattress, with HD types lasting longer.

ILD - indentation load deflection - is assessed by a rating and gives an accurate indication as to how soft or firm the memory foam mattress will be. The ILD rating is achieved by calculating how many pounds (lbs) of pressure are needed to indent a 4" layer of memory foam by 25% of its depth, with the rating displayed as a weight. ILD ratings are generally delivered as a range, due to a number of factors that can have a slight influence on them, such as humidity or other environmental factors. Lower ratings show a soft mattress, while higher ratings demonstrate a firm mattress.
